Northern Writers Forum In Partnership Bakandamiya Announces Call for Entries for Inaugural Ladi Kwali Poetry Prize

The Northern Writers Forum Journal, in collaboration with Bakandamiya, has officially opened submissions for the first edition of the Ladi Kwali Poetry Prize, a literary initiative established to honour the legacy of the late Nigerian potter and storyteller, Ladi Kwali, while spotlighting contemporary African poetic voices.

Named after the legendary artist who revolutionised traditional Nigerian pottery with her distinctive freehand techniques and symbolic designs, the prize seeks to uphold the spirit of artistic excellence she embodied. Ladi Kwali’s legacy continues to inspire generations, not only for her craft but for the depth of narrative and cultural identity embedded in her work.

In the words of celebrated Kenyan-born ceramicist Magdalene Odundo, “What is astonishing about Ladi Kwali is that she was able to maintain her style by remaining faithful to her unique fable-like, storytelling narratives with symbols drawn from the natural world that were the hallmark of her decoration.”

It is in this spirit that the Northern Writers Forum Journal is calling on African poets across the world to submit their most compelling and polished work. The prize is open to both emerging and established poets writing in English, regardless of location.

This year’s edition is supported through a strategic partnership with Bakandamiya, a leading digital platform championing African stories and voices. A total prize purse of ₦150,000 will be awarded, with the winner receiving ₦100,000, the first runner-up ₦30,000, and the second runner-up ₦20,000. All three winning entries will be published in the Northern Writers Forum Journal (NWFJournal).

Submissions are open from June 20 to November 30, 2025, and can be made via the official website:
